Musings on our math classes
|
1. Quote of the week
The future depends on what we do in the present. - Mahatma Gandhi
Some of you are so accomplished at playing an instrument or sports or other hobbies. I find what you all can do, very impressive. You know that your skill in these areas did not come overnight. You had to work at it. Each day you practiced. What we put into each day, will affect who we are in the future. Just like your instrument, or sport, or hobby. I hope that you do the same in math. Remember, what you put into math class today will affect your future.

2. Joke
Why did the turkey cross the street?
Ok, I know that is a pretty lame joke- sorry- I will try to do better next time. I am looking forward to a new school year with you all. I hope that you will feel free to come see me when you are struggling with a concept. I am here for you, not only to help with math, but also if you need someone to talk to. See you tomorrow!
P.S. On all my blog entries, feel free to leave comments.

3. Bonus points to the reader
Dear students, To thank you and reward you for keeping up with this site, and for checking out my blog (you know you love it...haha), I am going to give 2 bonus points to each student who can answer the following problem. Please don't yell out the answer in class, but put the answer in the basket by my desk (make sure your name is on it!).
Problem: Small pieces of cheese are placed over each of twelve numbers on the face of a circular clock. A mouse eats the cheese over the number 1 and walks clockwise around the clock, eating every other piece of cheese. What number will be under the last uneaten piece of cheese?
In other news, I just want to say that the first days of school have been wonderful. I hope that you have enjoyed them as much as I have. I look forward to journeying through the rest of the year with you. Please continue to speak up if you do not understand a concept. I am here for you. I want each of you to be successful this year.

4. Welcome Back to School!
This summer found me working full-time at the JRDS summer program and tutoring in the evenings. Not too exciting. Yet, I do have a funny story to share. My next door neighbor owns a Savvanah Monitor lizard who proudly goes by the name of Maximus. Now, Maximus is at least 3 1/2 feet long. My neighbor went on vacation and left me to babysit Maximus. I'm not a huge fan of reptiles, but I've held Maximus before so I figured watching him wouldn't be that hard. Well, that is until I found out I had to feed him mice. Maximus enjoys a mouse every three days. Personally, I did not want to watch him eat the mouse. So, the day before I had to feed him, I gave him a hard boiled egg. My thinking was that this egg would take the edge off his appetite so when I fed him the mouse, he would leave the mouse alone until I could leave. It was a brilliant plan that failed miserably.
He has a big glass cage. As I was pulling the mouse out of the box to feed him, Maximus was watching, flicking his creepy forked tongue in and out. By this point, I'm apologizing to the mouse. I lift up the top to the lizard cage. I place that little mouse as far away from the lizard as I can possibly place it, praying that Maximus won't eat it until I can get out the door. Maximus had other ideas. As soon as I place that mouse in his cage, I hear a crash. Maximus flies across his cage, pounces, gulps, and his meal is done. The mouse is gone. My plan to never witness the lizard eating a mouse had not worked. In other news, I am so excited you are all in my math classes this year. I look forward to getting to know each one of you. If you ever need anything or have any questions about what you are learning, please come see me. I'll be updating this blog occasionally. Feel free to leave me comments. P.S. In response to comments left on the previous blog post- No, I did not know Justin Beiber. Don't hate me for this, but I am not a Justin Beiber fan. I'm so sorry:).

5. Apologies
I hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Years! Mine was spent in Canada with my family. The weather was the craziest I've ever seen. If we weren't in the middle of a blizzard, then the weather was 30 degrees below zero. When I got there, we had about 1 foot of snow on the ground. By the time I left, there was at least 3 feet of snow.
Because of these blizzards, I was stuck at home a couple extra days, making me late getting back to school. I apologize that your homework was not posted on Monday and Tuesday.

6. It's Christmas!
Merry Christmas! I know so many of my ramblings on here discuss how fast time has been going. To me, it feels that we just started school, and here we are at Christmas time already. Yet, maybe to you, it feels that we've been in school FOREVER:). I remember being in middle school and feeling that time just dragged by. I would laugh when adults would say that time is flying by. Now, here I am, a few years later saying just what those adults would say - time does fly.
One lesson I've learned through this adult revelation (the revelation being that time does fly) is to make the most of each day. I'm learning to find joy in each day and not wish the time away. So, the point I am trying to make through my ramblings, is to go and enjoy Christmas break with your family. Make the most of each day with your family. Treasure your family- they are a very special part of each of our lives.
I'm proud of how you have all done in math so far this year. I know when we meet in 2010, you will continue to give your all in your schoolwork.
Merry Christmas! See you next year:)!

7. November 30, 09
Weeks have sped by and believe it or not, Christmas break is only 3 weeks away. To be more specific, it is only 20 days away. Yes, I have actually counted the days. No, I am not too old for that.
Between now and Christmas break we have so many exciting things happening. Pre-Algebra classes will be creating blue prints of their houses. Fifth grade classes will be continuing and hopefully finishing their vacation projects.
In the season of Thanksgiving, I find myself so grateful to be at James River. More specifically, I am so thankful for each of you students. I have so enjoyed each of your different personalities and I am blessed to be able to teach you.
Happy Thanksgiving! Miss Elmore
